Back in March I ran the Naked Prussian Marathon on March 31, 2018. It was my second time completing it. I finished it 30 minutes faster than last year – WHAT?! The weather was perfect for running. Since I have been running Uberendurance races for a couple of years now, I tend to see the same people on the trails every year. Last year I ran with a guy dressed like the pope this year I saw him within the first mile as well as another friend. So for the first half of the race I had company but right around the half way mark there a bunch of hills and I broke away from them. I didn’t feel like I was working very hard but I just felt solid and wanted to keep moving. It was such a beautiful day I was enjoying being outside.
Around mile 17 my stomach started giving me issues. I was eating too much junk and it was starting to upset my stomach and give me heartburn. I was regretting the sip of beer I had at the last aid station. Of course when I came up to the next aid station and they had Dunkin Donuts, I couldn’t help myself but have the lonely half someone had left. Nothing about that donut ended up being a good idea and just made the last six miles even more painful. If there is anything I am good at is putting my head down and working when that’s my only option. So that what I did.
I was able to finish in 6 Hours and 2 minutes which is 30 minutes faster than last year. I think I can shave even more time off next year! Overall the race was a lesson in nutrition, although I am burning 3,000 calories running it doesn’t mean I can eat whatever I want. Lesson learned.
