500 Miles – done

Boom.  500 miles for 2016 is in the books.  I wasn’t sure I was going to make this goal.  At the beginning of the year I was jamming along, not exactly getting all the miles I needed but considering I was 5 months pregnant I was still moving.  In February alone, I managed 75 miles at 6 months pregnant. But after that, as my belly grew, it wasn’t comfortable to run anymore and by the end of March my running was put on hold until after the baby.  I had the baby in May but I didn’t feel up to running until about July.  So in about 9 months I was able to complete my goal of 500 miles.  Not too shabby. Here are some highlights from the year:


Slow & Steady does not win the Race

A little over a month ago, I eagerly posted a detailed weight loss plan illustrating how I was going to lose 3 lbs a month and get back to size 2 by the time my baby turned one.  I was thrilled to report that I had made it down to my first goal of 145 lbs.  So I was on my way to skinny town!

slowsteadySo October 15th came and went and the scale has not moved.  145 lbs.  How is this possible?  I have been working out consistently. Eating relatively healthy and still breastfeeding (which burns an additional 500 calories).

How is it possible that my body is refusing to let go of this weight?  Hormones.  That’s what.  And you know what?  There’s nothing I can do about it except maybe stop breastfeeding my child.  So this Slow & Steady Weight Loss Plan can suck it! At least until I’m done breastfeeding.  There’s already so much pressure for mommy’s to get back in shape. Why am I adding to it?  Also I’m training for a damn 40 mile race.  I need to be kinder to myself and realize the amazing things this 145 lb body can do.  Rant over.

Mountain Lakes Trail Run

On Sunday I ran the Mountain Lakes Trail Run in beautiful Princeton, NJ.  It’s a very good thing I decided to do this race before my upcoming half marathon.  I did just about everything wrong for this race but luckily it was only 3.5 miles.  So, because I love lists, let’s just list out all of my mistakes so maybe I can learn from them.


  1. I went out WAY too fast.  I was running with two of my very tall and speedy friends so I was trying to keep them in view, which made me suck wind and have a killer side stitch during my 2nd mile.  See splits below:run-10-16-16
  2. I didn’t properly fuel before the run.   I breastfed the baby right before the start and I should have eaten something before starting the race.  Lesson learned.
  3. I wore something that I haven’t worn in a couple of months and normally I would be ecstatic about having my fat cloths starting to fit me looser but constantly pulling up my pants up during the race is NOT CUTE.
  4. My belly was FULL of water. I could literally hear it swishing around.  I didn’t go to the bathroom before the start – oops!

Even with everything that went wrong, I was so grateful to be on a trail running and doing what I love.  It was  a beautiful park and a great trail.  Still smiling….
